This wonderfully written short film, shot in the most beautiful manner, will remind you that the pain of yesterday is precisely where it belongs - in the past. It will take you deep into the realms of attraction, love, heartbreak, separation, hurt and to love again, because what else can we be sure of if not the cyclical nature of life? The short film will involve you to the point where the boundaries between the self and the characters will blur. You will be with them during their highs and lows and at the end of it all, find yourself smiling again. The film will leave you with hope - to either treat it with carelessness or to hold on to it safely for a rainy day.

The short film is a wonderful exploration of the last day of a broken up couple, moving out to go their separate ways. However, amidst all the fight and conflict who will have their claim to the little, white cat Coco? While the two are busy revisiting old fights, still unable to reach a resolution, Coco has plans of her own. The question is would the viewer be able to decide sooner than Coco what her fate should be? The film by MenXP is well-written with sophisticated camerawork, however, a slightly shorter length would have ensured a tautness that would have worked in its favour.

One night, a visibly distraught boy stumbles into a strange cafe where he is the only customer. He is met by a jovial man who offers him a menu that has no prices. The dishes are to be paid by his karma. What does the boy deserve, will he get what he desires or what the cosmos decides for him? The short film is his journey that involves moving from one kind of soup to another and how it ties up with his deepest secrets. The script, language, performances and the manner in which the two actors interact with each other is thespian in nature. Because it's reminiscent of a theatre performance, the short film sets high expectations for the viewer, higher than what it lives up to. While the idea of good karma is conveyed to be a cathartic exercise, instead of getting the message across to the viewer, it ends up feeling like a therapy session for the protagonist.

Karma Cafe | Short Film of the Day

The narrative primarily deals with the isolation and despair of a boy who has recently gotten his heart broken. With the opening visual of a snake slithering over his body as he hyperventilates in fear, the film takes the viewer deeper into his loneliness. The visuals are dim lit and empty with the surroundings being a direct echo of the protagonist's emotional state. As he is gripped by all-consuming love, there is no other companion to be found in the house except for the grim, dejected looking bust of a man, quietly observing the scene from the margins. The film draws attention to a deeply stigmatised aspect of society that leads to the misery and agony of countless people. As relationships get mired in the desperate need to achieve societal acceptance and a burning desire to stick to the normative, what would be the fate of so many who dare to step out of this structure? The film raises the same question and complements its visuals with a notable soundtrack and performances to drive its message home.

Yours Truly | Short Film Nominee

The actors of this film are so good looking and charming. There is song and dance, and all the ingredients of
a romance. You also feel like there’s genuine affection between them. Because gender wars have been the stuff of romantic comedies for ages, it's also alright to let pass by the
slight comments that the boy makes about his girlfriend’s behaviour to generalise the fickle-mindedness of the female gender. Firstly, that’s the stuff of harmless,
cute banter, and secondly, he also makes such generalisations on the nature of love, so it's all the same to the viewer. However, the narrative becomes a rumination of all his relationships and more women join in which somehow thins the film and its plot.

Manasanamaha | Short Film Nominee

The story of the film endeavours to tap into several emotions - heartache, professional success, moving on and all that is left behind in the wake of the inexorable passage of time. Most of the drama plays out in a single scene, one which consists of a conversation between two people. It is soon discovered that they are past lovers, both having moved ahead with their lives. But have they really? The film invokes the question and leaves it up to the reader to answer in whichever manner they deem feet. The action also changes in tonality and setting as it nears its conclusion. While the characters may have turned to the past to seek perhaps answers, maybe a closure of sorts, will they truly find it?

Galpa Alpa | Short Film Nominee

The ukulele-supported vocals present forth a soulful and catchy melody about a universally relatable experience - heartache after a breakup. The story is shared with the viewer by invoking a calm and soft atmosphere that takes them by the hand into the experiences of the protagonist. The music video is marked by its smooth visuals and a convincing performance, tied together neatly by competent singing. Despite the heavy subject matter and theme, the sound of the song is easy and lighthearted, of the right kind, allowing it to be an engaging product, without weighing itself down with sentimentalism, also earning this particular strength a separate mention. Though a cover of a famous song, Break Up Ke Baad brings to the table its own individuality, further making it stand apart for the audience.
