The latest offering by Blush is about the age-old debate - beauty versus brains. The discussion ties up with gender as two women argue if beauty for intelligent women is empowering or not. The film is simply a conversation between three of them, one for, one against and the third somewhere in the centre. They are made to sit side by side in a fixed frame, suggesting how they are all equals in this debate. It further offers a glimpse into the conversation around beauty which might not be entirely unique, but is much needed and imperative for us to go forward as a society.

The video marks ten years of a campaign that was started by actor and director Nandita Das under the Women of Worth NGO in 2009. Called Dark is Beautiful, the campaign attempts to fight discrimination against a dark complexion in India, a country which is made up of 1.3 billion people. The visuals include short sketches and a huge cast of different actors questioning the supremacy of fair skin in India, especially when it comes to defining beauty standards and ascribing value to a person. The cast, in an all-black attire, sings along to a song that questions the erasure of this particular kind of diversity in a country as massive as India.

Beauty is traditionally associated with age, but that is a gross misestimation, highlights this short film. By showing that it is more than skin deep and that it truly transcends age, the short film wonderfully portrays a woman's process of getting ready. As she applies kohl, decks herself in her finest attire, lets the sound of her bangles disrupt the silence that had ensconced itself around her, the narrative forces the viewer to reassess their idea of beauty as defined by convention. Where is beauty if not in the smile of a woman dressed in all her glory and finding endless joy in that, asks the narrative. It further equips itself with some lovely visuals to drive its message home impactfully.

'Ta'assur' is a lovely conversation on hesitation, inhibitions, fears, and the potential of love, be it for the self or someone outside it, to triumph it all. It opens with a scene that immediately conjures a sense of squalor and neglect. It is off-putting as much as it is an accurate representation of the protagonist's life. 
When we are taken deeper and deeper into her experiences, a reality marked by isolation and loneliness is further invoked. We see her struggle with crippling social anxiety, and the many ways in which it keeps her from leading the life she wants and deserves. The character and her portrayal both become notable characteristics of the film that serve to strengthen its universe. Along with the lows, her journey is also constituted by small, endearing moments which receive the justice they deserve by the plot, eventually leaving the viewer with a cohesive, balanced narrative at the end of it all.

The visual narrative of this poetic, musical film is constituted by several stages of emotions and experiences of a young woman, imagined as a love letter written to an unnamed, unknown character. From dressing up to seeking happiness, from the joy of being in one's finery to the pitfalls of separation, longing and grim events, the plot engages with them all. The visuals are set against a gentle, soulful song in a seamless manner, allowing the story to invoke in the viewer a deep poignance. Along with notable structuring, camerawork, voiceover and an overall elegant flow of events, the film is also marked by a skilled performance of the young protagonist.

Yours Sincerely | Short Film Nominee

After a seemingly long day, a woman returns home, and as she finally finds herself in her own space, free to move and express herself at ease, a rumination begins. It is this account which forms the body of the film, introducing the viewer to the dynamics of dating, from the point of view of the protagonist, in a heteronormative world. It soon progresses to question the location of women in a society where they are often reduced to simply their appearance. This precedes engagement with the idea of love, relationships, happiness and the manner in which all of them interact with each other to constitute life and existence, while also allowing the film to raise its eventual question that serves as the primary motivation of the plot.
