This short film gives us a glimpse into the life of a character we all may have encountered at some point. He is patriotic, but does this patriotism extend beyond social media? Is it simply confined to a desire to be self-righteous and judge others? One Day Mataram, in no indirect terms, draws the viewer's attention to the irony of someone who makes loud proclamations of his love for the country on social media, but in his personal life, the truth is far from it. Will this film offend the viewer or make them realise the hypocrisy and double standards of many around them (or perhaps themselves)? That's anyone's guess.

Patriotism has no language and this video goes ahead to prove that. It's early morning, time for assembly at a school and a young girl is late for it. As she desperately breaks into a run, the viewer immediately knows something important awaits her on the other end. She arrives just in time to sing the national anthem with the rest of the school. However, what makes this morning assembly stand out is the fact that it consists of differently-abled children. By invoking the idea of togetherness and union, The Silent Indian National Anthem leaves the viewer with an important message. We may all use different words or none at all, but at heart, we all speak the same language, wouldn't you agree?

The primary concern of the film is the compelling issue of exploring what freedom truly means, and its intricate relationship with the absence of fear. Once the narrative has conjured its idea of freedom for you, it moves forth to portray it in a concise manner by introducing us to a couple. 

The smiling lovers suddenly become very unsure of their safety in a public space like a roadside. The narrative heightens tension, only to puncture it in a way that presents its message about our contemporary reality loudly and clearly. The story is further taken home by competent performances who communicate it all with a frugal, but unequivocal verbal exchange.

Azaadi Mubarak | Short Film Nominee

The story is set in the aftermath of the Kargil war, fought between India and Pakistan in 1999. India has
been declared 'victorious' (the armed conflict was referred to as Operation Vijay, historically by the
Indian Defense Forces). A little girl is running across a street gleefully holding the Indian tricolour flag – not an uncommon image for a war film. A Sikh soldier returns to his house in the village post the war; except that it is
not his house. The twist that the film takes is hard-hitting, and drives home the point that we most need
right now: a war is victory with no survivors. With a noble message at its heart, the film foregrounds for the viewer that death and pain do not discriminate based on which side is victorious, and thus, leave behind endless loss in their wake.

Kargil | Short Film Nominee

Two little boys, Arif and Aman, both wearing kurtas of symbolic colors, saffron and green, meet for flying a kite on the terrace. During their playing, however, they realize that an egg is about to fall off a ledge. Thus begins the endeavor to save it by joining their forces in the most innocently heartwarming ways, presenting a message of unity, two identities working as one, the idea that would be echoed throughout the film prominently. These endearing visuals are coupled with a reality that is far from it - an offensive between two extremist groups which hunt each other down. As foes come face to face, ideas of friendship, harmony and brotherhood, tied with a thread of poetry, are portrayed for the audience, while condemning mindless violence in the name of politics of religion.

A Tale of Two Indians | Short Film Nominee

Made as a parody of one of the most iconic Bollywood films, Rang De Basanti, this video positions itself as a trailer of the sequel of the same. The story is of a young protagonist who wants to make a film on Tipu Sultan. However, given the hyper-political environment in the country, he is advised to do otherwise. As he onsets on the journey of making an independent, impactful film, auditions are held, work is begun and the realisation to not repeat the mistakes of his predecessors in the previous film is achieved. There is an attempt to invoke humour at the expense of the conflicted ideas of nationalism and the state of things which are a direct echo of contemporary Indian reality. The film is an ambitious satire, despite its limited resources, and is an honest endeavour deserving appreciation for trying to use humour to accentuate the importance of effecting change.

RDB 2: Tipu's Revenge | Short Film Nominee

The short film opens on the day of Gandhi Jayanti presumably. As two boys discuss their plan for the night, they are soon joined by an interesting companion. It turns out they have been visited by the Mahatma himself. The conversation flows between them touching and engaging with several topics - from religion to politics, to partition to non-violence. The film further attempts to invoke a sense of patriotism in the viewer, using history and the past developments as tools to communicate its message. It finally concludes with the reminder to strive to be the change you want to see in the world.
