When a man struggling with depression and walking down the path of self-destructive habits decides to listen to the voice within, everything changes for him. The Strings is like a canvas with multiple colours splashed across the board. This is also an image that the
film realises in its form. A film that blends other art forms into itself is always a visual delight.
 On the level of the content, the story deals with a serious issue, that of mental health. It depicts the polar
struggles of an individual with a mental illness who can be a prolific artist, painting bold strokes at one
moment, and be completely overcome by cobwebs of complacency and melancholy. We see his
loneliness, grief and yearning. The film aims to promote hope and positivity and thus, ends only after we
have seen the silver lining in his circumstance.

Our first interaction with the story is an interaction with a moment of crisis. Something crucial is unfolding for the protagonist, something we would only be allowed a suggestion of without truly knowing what went wrong. However, the moment, and the woman’s comforting whoever the person is on the other side of her phone screen, is sufficient to reveal to us everything that it entails. 

After meeting the homemaker at the heart of a marriage which gives her little comfort or solace, we are allowed a clearer understanding of the tribulations that afflict her life. It is only when the viewer finds out who the recipient of all her phone calls is, that the film’s intentions are made lucid for us. In the process, an important message about mental health, the isolation of depression and the desperate need to simply find a kind friend is pronounced for the audience.

The Confidant | Short Film of the Day

‘Reflection of Waves’ has a significant theatrical quality to it, but one which aids the narrative more than hindering it. The storytelling, in the process, becomes the most remarkable aspect of the film, along with a strong performance of the protagonist. 

The story is fairly straightforward - it is about the deep despair of a man, Alan, and how it has plagued his life for the entire sixty years of his existence. It has isolated him, made him the subject of mockery, ridicule, pity, has adversely affected his relationships, and yet, there seems to be no escape from it even after all these years and bitter experiences. The manner of portraying this is far from simple, and notably so. By using the same physical space of a house, we are introduced to Alan's past as well as the present. 

Even though it would be interesting to see a future project with tighter control on visuals, within the narrative rests an unmissable comment about mental health (perhaps depression, even though it is never explicitly stated) which is communicated through the internal turmoil of the protagonist. At the end of it all, however, would it be a sense of hope and companionship at last that would welcome Alan with open arms or would it be a brutal, gory end to his life?

Reflection of Waves | Short Film of the Day

The film invokes a sense of deliberate unease with its experimental approach, marked by a high-paced edit with seamless transitions, each smoother than the other. It takes the viewer into the life of a disturbed protagonist who dreams of becoming a pilot. His reality, however, is far from that. The narrative further brings in an experience of emotional isolation from a distanced family, mental health struggles, and lastly, the failure to clear the examination that would have enabled him to finally become a pilot. As he expresses his grievances with his parents, and his hatred for his desk job, the role of mental health, primarily depression and Alzheimer's, is conjured to reveal to the viewer the obstacles in the protagonist's path. The film also brings to life ideas of a parallel existence, a philosophical engagement with the same, while employing flying and dreams as important metaphors and symbols. The final product is marked by an easy flow of visuals and camerawork that exhibits notable potential.

Pavamanam | Short Film Nominee

Mental health crisis has reached a staggering high globally, often leaving people incapacitated in several ways. Other than being a private tormentor, an illness like depression can completely cripple someone who battles it, leaving them with little to no desire to even step out of their house, be with their loved ones or spend time with activities they might have previously enjoyed. The narrative of the short film engages with all of these concerns, and thereby, furthers the conversation around mental health, a pressing need of the hour, in a significant manner. By portraying the struggles of its protagonist Reva, it brings to life an important story, leaving the viewer with the reminder about how isolating a mental health illness can truly be. There is further a point to be made about the lack of any or all external triggers in case of depression, ensuring to communicate to the viewer that it can target anyone in any manner, irrespective of their lived experiences and reality. In the process, the film becomes a relevant comment on mental health, emphasizing the dire need of identifying, acknowledging and addressing the several nuances and complexities that come to constitute it.
