Is it difficult to talk about? Is it just a phase? ‘What’s Wrong?’ is a deeply moving short film about a woman who is dealing with depression. It's a serious mental health condition and Shraddha Singhvi does justice in capturing the nuances of it.

Thorny plants, peeling walls, and some other dying corners of a house establish the tone of the film for the viewer. A sick man lies bedridden when he is visited by a concerned, panicked well-wisher. The man instead focuses on a plant called Junie, and continues to dismiss the entrant’s anxiety. As the story proceeds, a world marked by chronic illness, loss, grief, and immense tragedy is invoked by the viewer. 
The screenplay and performances remain tightly intertwined as one to bring forth an expert end result. The emotional spectrum is achieved with skill, offering the viewer a glimpse into relationships and familial bonds that are messy and overburdened with all kinds of complexities, and yet, they remain the most unexpected as well as powerful source of comfort.

Junie | Spotlight

The short film explores the many facets of motherhood as well as of right and wrong. The overarching question it attempts to raise is if the outcome can be seen as the index for judging a difficult decision. Maa is about a struggle between a woman and her elder son regarding treatment of her younger son's addiction. The visuals employ dimly-lit frames to invoke a sense of darkness that clouds the lives of the characters. With strong performances and mature writing, the film delivers a well-rounded product.

At the start of the film, we find a solitary character, going up a mountain. The same is conveyed using what seems like promising camerawork, but will it be able to sustain itself throughout the narrative? That’s a question the viewer would have to answer for themselves. As the character continues with his ascent, he is soon captured by a group of men who mean nasty business. Now begins the back and forth movement of the narrative with its two parallel stories. The protagonist has gone in search of a unique substance occurring naturally that could serve to heal his ailing father. However, he soon finds himself running into trouble. Will he be able to overcome it and help his father in time or is it the end of the road for our protagonist for good?

The pandemic has affected people around the world in numerous ways. Apart from the impact of
the Covid-19 virus on the physical body as a disease, the isolation and the anxiety has also taken a toll
on the mental health of humans across the globe. The Incurable is one such story that combines the
fears around the terminal effects of the disease along with the psychological worries and symptoms it
prompts. Employing the same, it presents to the viewer the struggles of its protagonist with these issues.

From the struggle to secure employment to financial trouble to kindness and empathy, the film attempts to weave it all in its narrative. It opens on a musical note, complete with ideas of hope and a determination to never give up. However, soon things take a turn for the worse for the protagonist. One day an unexpected call from a stranger alters the course of things for him, and he finds himself moving in the direction of prosperity. With its story that straddles the past and the present, Kani wants to remind the viewer the significance of life, and how not let obstacles daunt them because one way or the other, a solution would always be available.

The primary concerns of the film include loyalty, envy and how the two combine to eventually lead to revenge. The story opens with the myth of a magical statue that could cure all illnesses. We are soon taken into the lives of two men where one battles an illness and the other provides him with an antidote. Things continue to unfold in a fast-paced manner, hinting at far more disconcerting things than the viewer would have expected at the first glance. The plot employs a varied background score, heightened emotions and an element of fantasy to construct and weave its narrative. The audience is kept guessing till the end, as it further utilises a real life example of the most dangerous creature in the world, justifying its title as well in the process.
