When you deal with a topic like gender, there is the danger of running into repetition and monotony. The content around the topic has set the bar very high and a film has to be especially unique to eschew these problems. It would be safe to say that Kahi Suni, the second episode of the series - Sisterhood Tales by Blush, comes midway in this journey. When it starts, it does not set the horizon of expectation too high - it's the story of yet another woman who's trying to balance work with her family's expectations. However the short film becomes a little more interesting as she sits in her cab to find a woman driver. From there, the narrative only goes higher and higher. During the course of her ride, she also finds out that the driver is specially abled. In the process, the film leaves the viewer with a subtle but impactful message about how we view people who are different from us. It further reiterates that simply by standing up for each other, we can make our struggles easier, even if slightly so.

Patriotism has no language and this video goes ahead to prove that. It's early morning, time for assembly at a school and a young girl is late for it. As she desperately breaks into a run, the viewer immediately knows something important awaits her on the other end. She arrives just in time to sing the national anthem with the rest of the school. However, what makes this morning assembly stand out is the fact that it consists of differently-abled children. But as she goes about getting ready with extra enthusiasm on this particular morning, the viewer immediately knows it's an important day for her. By showing the hustle and bustle of the morning rush, Jazba normalises life and routine of a differently abled person. This perhaps is the first step in fighting stigma and making the temporarily-abled realise that no one is any less than them.

The short film is the story of two sisters where the elder one takes care of her younger sibling who is in a wheelchair. As she struggles to keep up with her various responsibilities, she finds herself tempted to go down a dark path from where there is no return. The narrative introduces us to various moments of their affection and intimacy. This is done perhaps intentionally to achieve an element of shock at what follows. The manner in which events develop in the story is aimed to provide a jarring image in direct contrast to the earlier ones of love and sisterhood. While light and dark continue to wage a battle within the protagonist, who will be victorious at the end of it all?

Pratibimbo | Short Film Nominee

The short film is a unique love story with an unexpected twist as its climax. It's simple and direct in its approach and a conversation between two of its only characters constitutes the narrative. The story develops to reveal that the boy has expressed his love for the girl. However, she only wants and expects friendship from him. There is further an attempt to make their story meaningful and poignant with a potentially interesting plot development. Will Kadhalagi be able to take the viewer by surprise with its attempted pathos and sentiment?

My Heroes leaves the audience with the wonderful message that no challenge is big enough if you set your heart to it. As the short film follows the life of three athletes, it shows that differently abled or not, nothing can stop you from achieving what you want, which in this case, happens to be becoming a champion swimmer. With its heart in the right place, this documentary film stands out for the honesty of the narrative and the way it manages to tug at your heartstrings.
