Reunion is a story of closure, obtained years after separation. This short film by Google is very well directed and crafted, especially how it captures the power of Google Search in daily life. The actors are good, as is the wonderful background track by Piyush Mishra, Bachpane ki tang gali. Go visit your childhood.

If you watch one video today, let it be that of this wonderful rendition of the Justice League soundtrack by Tushar Lall and a team of incredibly talented musicians from The Indian Jam Project. The music video is a heartwarming take on popular culture and how it manages to pervade all sections of the Indian society. However, behind the beauty of music and a bunch of lovely children finding their superheroes within themselves, is a dark and unfortunate reality which this video successfuly manages to address with sophisticated cinematography and a skiled Indo-fusion soundtrack.

The narrative is an exploration of a single afternoon when the protagonist finds himself in his childhood home. While the film opens with his rejecting his parents' idea of nostalgia, soon we find him giving in to the same sentiment as he stumbles across a seemingly inane object from his past. Thereafter begins a conversation with Chintu, a stuffed monkey who was left behind all those years ago. Essentially, what the toy does is take the protagonist into the deep recesses of his emotions. This inevitably raises questions about happiness, satisfaction and where he is located in life. The film thus becomes an endearing story of an unexpected realisation during a quiet, calm afternoon when all that our protagonist had set out to do was complete a chore for his parents.

Picnic is a skilled attempt to talk about familial love, separation and inevitable pain. The short film weaves a narrative around an ordinary day in the life of a family preparing to head out for a picnic. The paranthas are packed, the playlist is downloaded and the final Virat Kohli score is checked before stepping out. Yet, something is amiss, a deep emotion pulls at the heartstrings of the family members. What is that emotion and how does it set this particular picnic apart? Watch the film to find out.

When a skilled voiceover is coupled with sophisticated, seamless visuals, there is little that can go wrong. The short film is a paradigmatic example of the balance that such a combination brings to the table. Essentially, the story of the film is no more than a romance with a season, but one which is not simply constituted by weather. It is made up of nostalgia, memory, a fondness for the past, and the experience all of it eventually leads to. The narrative is smart with its length, keeping it just right to convey the message in a heartwarming, endearing manner, without either communicating or holding back too much. The plot is a weaving together of lovely metaphors and imagery that further serve the purpose of enhancing its easy, but powerful narration, to allow the viewer a glimpse into perhaps their own childhood memories of a summer spent chasing all sorts of reveries and dreams.

Mere Sheher Ki Garmiyan | Short Film of the Day

‘Yellow’, though conjures a world of lightness and energy in its title, is far from it in its intentions, and deliberately so. Employing animation and the consequent imagery it presents, clearly exhibiting investment of thought, the film tells a story about a little boy, Hari, and the many ways in which his childhood dreams and desires are shackled. 
Despite paintings and pictures on public walls, denoting an independent India, the reality is far from it. The storytelling, and the visuals it’s coupled with, remain notable strengths of the film which, in turn, emphasise the importance of education, and the devastating effects of cyclical poverty and financial trauma that gets passed down from one generation to another.

Yellow | Short Film Nominee

Made as a celebration of all the elders that inspired them, this Swarathma music video is sure to add colour to a dull day. Rang Zinda Hai is a beautiful reminder of how age is simply a number. Visuals of a group of the elderly getting together to play with colour, listen to a song or huddle around a carrom board compliment this soulful number. On a bleak winter day, the song is bound to invoke warmth and a sense of hope in the viewer's heart. Aptly modelled on its theme Bachpan After Pachpan (Childhood After 55), it is the most heartwarming reminder that there is no such thing as giving up, and that if your heart truly desires it, you can live your entire life with childlike wonder and innocence.

Rang Zinda Hai | Short Film of the Day

Devoid entirely of dialogue, the short film conjures an immensely conflicted realm of domesticity simply by way of visuals and performances. It is marked by abuse, addiction, violence and the adverse consequences of the same on the relations that exist within this familial space. Denied a voice or agency within the structure, the wife watches quietly as her alcoholic husband puts her and their son through intense abuse and trauma on a daily basis. Outside the house, however, is a little shrubbery of roses, serving as mute spectators to the tragedy unfolding before them. As the boy waters them, the woman perhaps watches them from her window, and the husband destroys property while they stand witness, the story develops into its own, offering you a motif, ever present and silent, and yet, weaving the existence within the four walls of the house into a whole.

I Belong to the Roses | Short Film Nominee

Invoking memories and all that they come to stand for eventually, the short film juxtaposes the past against the present, the wisdom and hindsight of old age against the naïveté and innocence of childhood. All of this is engaged with using a chess board and the various moves of the game as a metaphor. The entire journey of reminiscing is completed by the protagonist while simply sitting in a room with only a chess-board as his companion. The story is told in a notable manner with camera work that exhibits potential. Further, the atmosphere which is conjured using the background score is also worthy of attention, and serves to add an extra layer to the already skilled performance of its primary character.
