The narrative takes us into the life of Tulsiram who lives in Dharakhoh, a quiet corner of rural India close to Bhopal and Nagpur. His existence is simple and marked only by a life of needs. The wants are few, as are the demands from the world around him. The intention of the narrative seems to echo and celebrate this simplicity. 
We are presented with little anecdotes from our protagonist’s life. From mysteries of cows who suddenly stop lactating to the many small ways in which he makes a living for himself to the manner in which his village changes with the changing seasons of the year - all of these various elements have a role to play in sharing his story. The end result is straightforward and well-meaning.

‘Remnants’, a short animation film executed on the 3D graphics tool, Unreal Engine, conjures a reality of loss and grief left behind in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. At the film’s opening, a newspaper headline about overwhelming oxygen shortages establishes this world for us. 

The rest of the visual development then becomes a glimpse into a life that once was, what existence used to be, marked by inane objects that constituted a life before it was ravaged by tragedy. Underlying it all, however, is also the reminder that no matter the scale of loss, the world continues to move ahead as the passage of time marches forth.

From reading and sketching to listening to music and watching films or TV shows, the short film gives a glimpse into the hobbies of the protagonist that are keeping him occupied during the lockdown. It is these hobbies that become the sole characters on screen, aptly summarising his experiences of the quarantine.

Life in a Lockdown | Lockdown Film Challenge

The story wants to remind the viewer of the importance of one of the most important figures in Indian history - Mahatma Gandhi. The film is short and simple and conveys a direct message. The narrative begins and concludes with a glimpse into a day of a little school boy. As he learns a history lesson about the father of the nation in his classroom, he finds a different reality on his way back home after the lesson is over. He stumbles across a forgotten picture of Gandhi on the road, in direct contrast with what he just learnt a few hours ago. By providing the juxtaposition, the film wants to invoke a sense of respect for the Mahatma which many in contemporary India may have forgotten.
