The Litchi

By Debanjan Mitra with 6.5

drama · Short Films · bengali

Though the film tells a fictive story, it locates itself in a very harsh event of the real world. It talks of the 2019 deaths of undernourished children in Muzzafarpur caused by toxins found in litchi. The toxins lead to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) in children, causing a huge loss of life and immense misery to innumerable families.

As a doctor battles the trauma of living through this within the universe of the film, dealing with the agony of the parents of his deceased patients, another reality unfolds. One day, he finds himself in the company of a powerful government official, a politician. The ensuing conversation provides the crux of the story. This, in turn, becomes the strongest aspect of the film, drawing the viewer’s attention to the unfairness of a corrupt, selfish world where the powerless and the weak continue to suffer with no sympathizers or helpers in their plight.
