‘The Outbreak’ is defined by an unmissable sleekness, and an equally complementary background score to go with it all. It is located in a world that has battled a lockdown for a year, up to a point where people have run out of food. They have now resorted to cannibalism and hunting each other down. 

As the announcer on the radio acquaints us with this world, the protagonist’s pursuit of securing his survival continues. The film is further embellished with a competent edit that keeps the action rolling in a high-paced manner. Whether escape is available for the humans trapped in the world of ‘The Outbreak’ is anyone’s guess, but as for the film, it surely remains an entertaining, consistent watch throughout.

The Outbreak | Short Film of the Day

The film invokes a narrative that opens with the upheavals that the coronavirus has caused all over the world, only to give way to a virus of another kind. It's one that consumes your existence, but is it a mental health crisis or a pandemic or something entirely different that comes riding on the feelers of an insect? The film raises all of these questions, taking the viewer into the locked down reality of its protagonist who, one day, finds a surreptitious intruder in his house. It is further marked by a fitting background score, allowing the final product to be a sincere, unequivocal portrayal of its concerns, intentions and plot.

Arrival | 2020 Film Challenge

The film locates itself on a parallel timeline in 2080. The world, much like our contemporary existence, is plagued by a virus. Within the universe of the film, it threatens to consume human existence. At the same time, the story portrays 2020 as a wonderful year for everyone on the timeline. 

The narrative engages with androids, time travel, the adverse consequences of playing with the fabric of time, and ties it all together with smooth graphics and storytelling. It is these two elements which especially enrich the final result. Future projects, however, can benefit more if the various elements are tied with performances which are as consistent as the former.

The Dissemination | Short Film Nominee

The trajectory of the film maps a single day in the life of the protagonist. Starting from eight-thirty in the morning right up to five in the evening, we are introduced to his lived reality. In its short duration, the narrative also familiarizes the viewer with a dystopic world where a virus has wreaked immense havoc on humankind. As our protagonist is left all by himself for a period of about a hundred days, he is also portrayed as battling doubts, uncertainty pertaining to existence, but more importantly, the isolation and loneliness of a world that seems to have fallen apart. The entirety of the plot unfolds in a first-person voice, striving to imbue itself with intimacy and an emotional appeal. However, unsure of answers to questions of survival, of both himself as well as that of his family, when he finally decides to take matters in his own hands, will he truly find his destination?

Alone | Short Film Nominee

The sudden outbreak of the highly contagious and potentially deadly coronavirus in early 2020 led to an atmosphere of chaos and fear across the country, with growing doubts in people’s mind about the government's capability to combat such adverse situations proactively. The short film, Viral, builds on a similar premise and presents a press release from a government authority on how they plan to tackle the pandemic. 
Issues such as insufficient or incorrect data on Covid-19 cases and deaths, shortage of vaccines, among others, are highlighted as part of the film's narrative. During the course of the story, there is also the attempt to portray the paranoia and immense stress that came to define the year 2020 and the events that followed.

Viral | Short Film Nominee

The film employs stop motion, humour and a lighthearted tone to portray the fight of two brothers against coronavirus. Represented in the form of a video game, the film puts forth a colourful and sweet narrative to communicate its story to the viewer.

Super Warrior Bros | Lockdown Film Challenge

The story locates itself in Mumbai of 2025 where, after having battled the Covid-19 pandemic, life is beginning to return to complete normalcy. However, before the world can take a complete sigh of relief, China releases a new virus called Octrone, as a bio-weapon, asserts the film. Amidst it all, there are doubts about the allegiance and loyalty of a senior Indian official, Dr. Sen. Another official is made to tail him to discover his true intentions and the actions he is about to perform. The narrative wants to employ suspense and thrill, and conjure a sci-fi story for the viewer to be immersed in. As it develops, it strives for the same, also aiming for intrigue and unexpected plot developments. While the story exhibits potential that could have been developed further, a better control on its visuals would have surely enhanced it.
