The story locates itself in Mumbai of 2025 where, after having battled the Covid-19 pandemic, life is beginning to return to complete normalcy. However, before the world can take a complete sigh of relief, China releases a new virus called Octrone, as a bio-weapon, asserts the film. Amidst it all, there are doubts about the allegiance and loyalty of a senior Indian official, Dr. Sen. Another official is made to tail him to discover his true intentions and the actions he is about to perform. The narrative wants to employ suspense and thrill, and conjure a sci-fi story for the viewer to be immersed in. As it develops, it strives for the same, also aiming for intrigue and unexpected plot developments. While the story exhibits potential that could have been developed further, a better control on its visuals would have surely enhanced it.

The film is about the dark, and deadly elements that could possibly come alive at night if we
didn’t watch our step. A young man lies flat on the road, visibly injured. Another is driving a car on the same road. Their
paths cross. What is in store? The film is an attempt to raise awareness about an important issue. It would have, however, gained from a little control on lights and shadows.

The Night | Short Film Nominee

The story is of a single encounter between an Indian Army personnel and a Kashmiri militant. Through their conversation, ideas of freedom, revenge and the State are invoked. However, despite all its attempts, the film remains threadbare and does not add significantly to the dialogue around the same topic. As both characters put forth the motivations behind their actions, the film exhibits a want of technical strengths, primarily in the sound and dubbing department. Better control of the light would have also helped. Yet, despite its weaknesses, Haalaat remains a brave attempt that hopes to leave the viewer with positive and constructive food for thought.
