The short film is a quiet engagement with the notions of loneliness, isolation and all they could potentially signify about the state of human existence in the larger scheme of things. As a woman spends her time in silent conversation with her thoughts, there are perhaps a thing or two she is about to learn about herself as well as her relationship with the world around her. The film is soothing in the tone it adopts, and the skilful visuals it chooses to share its story. The manner is notable and seamless in giving a glimpse into the struggles of the protagonist with boredom and idleness, which lead to a comfort she finally achieves with herself. After all, as the Bollywood song playing in the background suggests, sometimes an entire existence can be achieved within a single moment, when armed with your favourite cup of tea and nature as your sole companion.

The film wants to invoke a soulful tone to portray its protagonist's conversations and relationship with silence. The past year allowed us more of these ruminations as the world and our existence got tied up with a pandemic, lockdown and the subsequent emotional and physical isolation. The narrative wants to invoke the same reality and talk about the several moments in a day when silence makes its presence felt, sometimes creeping up on you sneakily, other times standing stoically like a quiet, constant companion. Additionally, the film, a solo project, exhibits a cheery voiceover that uplifts the final product, as well as the desire to experiment with visuals.

The film opens with an interrogation and it is through the recounting of events by the man sitting before you that we are taken back in time. The story that begins to unfold is of one night when an important politician has been murdered. However, just when the viewer might be led to believe that this would be a whodunnit about solving the case, another parallel strand develops within the narrative. The cop, who is on his way to assess the crime scene, is met with a young writer. This development, in turn, brings into the plot his own philosophy of writing, existence and the worth of life in this world which refuses to break its silence while one wrong after another continues to get committed. In the process, the film raises its own existential questions, and presents forth the young man's understanding of not only the silence, but also a solution that could smash this overwhelming quiet into a loud cacophony. The film's intention is to present to you its ideological underpinnings in an objective manner without taking sides. Once this has been achieved, the viewer is then allowed to make up their own mind about the issues and matters at hand.

The Covid-19 lockdown brought with it a quiet that was a stranger to all of us. It is a similar sense of calm that makes its way into the poetic narrative of the film. The story progressively becomes a representation of our immediate reality as the various moments of life during the pandemic are strung together. The stillness of the frames is tied with an elegant voiceover that presents to the viewer the many thoughts of the protagonist. The mind wanders to all kinds of forbidden, as well as welcome places, during the course of the day, following the same pattern into the night, often keeping one awake despite the lateness of the hour. The poetry of Haalaat, a solo project, invokes them all for you to engage with.

A musician finds a lot of wonderful conversations with his instruments as he is forced to be only with himself. The silence of his life is filled with the sounds of the keys and strings who are his sole companions in a room, and the short film, thus becomes an engagement with the thoughts that follow.
