In the most touching manner, it draws attention to the indomitable human spirit which, no matter what, irrespective of the scale of the calamity, will always fight back and find hope. It also manages to be very powerful and evocative despite its short length. While celebrating Kerala's recovery post the devastating floods of 2018, the film makes another subtle yet relevant comment and that is on gender. Shot in the beautiful locations of Kannur, Kerala, it shows a young woman taking a train ride to meet her grandfather. Released as musician Mali's first single, the song has a calmness that would ring deep and true with the viewer and the listener long after it's over. When the strumming of an acoustic guitar is coupled with the visuals of the sea indeed there is little that can go wrong.

The short film is a window to what it's like to holiday in Kerala, or as they call it, God's own country. From friendly elephants and feeding them bananas, to dressing up in traditional attire and meeting with the locals, the film inspires one to travel to new places. It also shows a Caucasian couple enjoying an authentic experience in the state. While there might have been trouble in their paradise at the start of the video, it is reconciled as hearts are won over by Kerala.

The documentary film is a zealous endeavour to introduce the viewer to Kerala's fishermen community. It picks several case studies to bring in varied voices to talk about their tribulations, plans and expectations from future generations, relationship with education - their own as well as that of their children, and their ideas of religious harmony. Visually, however, the film stands to gain from closer attention to colour correction. The final product shows potential, presenting the viewer with the cause of its arguments, even though a more defined effect for the same would have allowed the film an added coherence. Overall, Vellam remains a well-intentioned product, exhibiting vision and should be appreciated thus.
