Navin Kumar moved to Pune, Maharashtra from his native Rajasthan. With his cheery smile and twinkling eyes, our first impression of the film’s subject is marked by ease and endearment. However, his tale is far from that, as is revealed with the unfolding of the narrative. 

The protagonist, equipped with his story and experiences, is the most remarkable aspect of the film. Though it displays rough edges when it comes to production and a few technical aspects of the end result, they are easy to overlook in the face of the story that is presented to the viewer. 

'KB Future' is a film defined by its heart and soul. The story it offers is a difficult one, it is one of child marriage, caste discrimination, financial burdens, neglected health, familial duty, and lastly, of unrequited love and heartbreak. While our protagonist may openly profess his love for a girl he may never win over, he can still not reject his circumstance or the many oppressions, and discriminations life has offered him with the same openness and ease, presenting a quiet comment on the internalization of structures and how deep it runs. All of this is presented in a straightforward manner, without burdening the film with righteous morality or any explicit rejections or dismissals.

Gulab Kothari of Madhya Pradesh wants to teach his young, reluctant son the art of playing taashe, a widely celebrated musical instrument in the vicinity. Desperate to pass on his family lineage, he forces Shiv to sit with him and learn the instrument. However, nothing helps the old father until Shiv witnesses a young girl dancing gracefully to the beat of taashe. 
Immediately, Shiv is in complete awe of the sweet girl, Jugni and decides to impress her by learning the instrument. He starts to look after his appearance, tires his father out by long, multiple lessons and even starts to save money to buy Jugni a pair of ghungru. Little does our young protagonist realize that amidst his innocent fantasies and dreams, rests a grotesque ugliness of the adult world. Right when his plans are about to achieve their goal, a staggering conclusion awaits the narrative, one that changes things in a lasting manner for the little boy, and leaves the audience with a pressing social message.

Taashe | Short Film Nominee

The film is a powerful, moving documentation of life in an Indian village plagued with gender-based discrimination, child marriage and rampant denial of education to young girls. When some volunteers decided to do an eleven-day-theatre workshop in Motipura, a small corner of Gujarat, they were probably unaware of the sheer force of the rejection and rebellion against these malpractices that they were about to unearth in this part of the country. 

In a society where girls are married off right when they hit puberty, while their male counterparts are still allowed a chance at education, this workshop allowed forty children in the village to speak openly, even if for a brief period, about the things they truly desire. 

All the voices in the narrative make pertinent comments about the location of women in society and the absolute importance of education in allowing them social mobility. It presents to you a fight which is passionate, raw and completely undaunted in its intentions to keep pushing forth. The one thing that keeps Lakoti Party from being all that it could have been is the lack of stability in its sounds and visuals. It tells a beautiful, compelling story, but loses crucial points on the technical front employed in presenting it to the viewer.
