While it could mean literal death, the film perhaps also suggests a metaphorical death - maybe death of an old self, a bad habit, an addiction or any inhibition that keeps you from being all that you can be? Though the use of shadows and the black and white ambience is intentional, the film could have still gained from a little control on its lighting.
