‘Deadline’ is a film that exhibits investment of thought, and care in the construction of its universe. It introduces us to the protagonist who is in the most unusual job. He works as a telephone operator for a company where people can call to have conversations with the technologically generated voices of their deceased loved ones.

The film presents its own individual take on a space marked by a dark realm of science fiction, where technology reigns free, taking over the deepest human emotions and experiences, and rendering them impersonal to the point of being dystopic. The protagonist is stuck in a purgatory-esque space of a fairly difficult job that is not only confined to a drab world of greys and mindless labor but is also emotionally overwhelming.

The premise the narrative builds on is notable, even if sometimes raising more questions than it answers. It definitely leaves one with the promise of a longer project that takes us into the film’s universe further.
