The short film introduces the viewer to a queer woman and the manner in which her sexuality has come to define both her private and professional life. The title, in the process, becomes a clear assertion of the hope of attaining a regular life milestone, but one which the normative order of society threatens to deny her. A photographer by profession, Monisha Ajgaonkar is at her candid best as she allows her most vulnerable moments to unfold before the lens, lending the film a notable poignancy. It would have, however, been interesting and more enriching for the film to have explored it further. On the whole, it remains a resounding story, marked by a skilled visual narrative, about an experience all too common in a world that still continues to silence or push aside any gender or sexual identity that endeavours to break away from heteronormativity. In such a scenario, the film does its bit to start and encourage an important conversation.

The film is short, but crisp and potentially powerful when it comes to the idea it aims to convey. A woman is all dressed up as a bride and is about to get married. Before she steps out to walk towards the wedding party, she receives a call from her mother. The story is weaved smartly because the call immediately makes the viewer question why is the mother not present by her daughter's side. Apparently, there is conflict with the father which has resulted in this. As a nervous, but determined bride begins her walk towards the altar, there awaits a celebration of love that transcends all societal and normative constructs.

A Raksha Tale provides us a glimpse into the protagonist’s journey of finding themselves and being accepted for the same by their loved ones. Abha, the youngest daughter of the family, was born on the widely celebrated Hindu festival, Raksha Bandhan.
Apart from having the benefit of receiving double the gifts, as was tradition every year, on her thirteenth birthday, they asked for one more present - that the elder sister should tie them a rakhi as well along with tying it to the brother. 

This event becomes crucial to not only the narrative, but also Abha's relationship with their body and identity. It is what lies on the other side of it that truly conveys the core intentions of the film, along with a heartening tale of gender transition and the message of acceptance and compassion.
