With a play on the word ‘seerat’ or a person’s inner identity or reality in its title, the narrative presents to you an experimental engagement with its premise. As the protagonist dons a mask, the plot endeavors to invoke a metaphor about identity and how we might feel the urge to conceal it behind several layers, that we posit as our own reality. This positioning is achieved not only for the world outside, but also for the person within. 

Amidst it all, is the invincible and potent role of love, and the manner in which it can mold or control the aforementioned masks. It is 'Khoobseerat'’s attempt to invoke all of these ideas for you to engage with.

The Covid-19 pandemic has left endless stories of loss and pain in its wake. The short narrative attempts to engage with one such example. It is the story of a woman who has ordered a cake for her father who had been infected with the coronavirus. The plot is straight and direct, and yet, it carries an unexpected development at its conclusion, conveying its primary intentions to the viewer with the final revelation.

The Cake | Lockdown Film Challenge

The film is a first person narration about the protagonist's relationship with her father. It also brings in gender to discuss her identity and location in society as a girl, and eventually, a woman. A poetic voice ties itself with silhouettes and shadows which are then employed to visually represent all of this for the viewer. This, in turn, allows the film to use limited resources to convey its message. From her birth to becoming a bride, the several stages of her life are mapped for the audience, finally leaving them with the expression of a daughter's love for her father, as well as the manner in which a woman's identity, ambitions, hopes and dreams are formed with regards to her familial and domestic space.
