The Thief

drama · Short Films · tamil

The film is a commentary on survival in the cut-throat, capitalistic world of a big city where a man has come seeking employment. After selling his mother's ancestral property, and barely making ends meet, in the quest of bribing a senior professional to help him secure a government job, he is left at his rope's end. As a first-person voice takes us into the protagonist's journey of resorting to pick-pocketing to keep himself from starving, the narrative presents an implicit question about who truly is a thief in this world.

The tone and execution of the plot remain notable, as do the performances. There is also philosophical rumination about the nature of tragedy and how the index of its measurement differs depending on the wealth and poverty of the person it strikes. The final result is promising, even if it loses points in the department of visuals, a characteristic that can be modified in future projects.
