The music video aspires to pack an entire punch within its short duration, complete with potent points about surveillance, the infestation of technology in our lives, resistance and the desire to question the status quo of those in power around us. Right at the very beginning, we see an image marked by protesters, something which has come to define the recent past in India. Be it the CAA protests or those against the Farm Bill, the animation and imagery that the video uses wants to jog our memory of these pivotal moments from last year. It ties them all together with complementary vocals and music to further communicate its intentions to the viewer in a direct, notable manner.

Why Did You Do It? | Short Film Nominee

As the protagonist finds herself torn between the ideologies she believes in, and the ones that are forced down her path by way of familial expectations, the narrative offers relevant lessons on the consequent struggle, standing up against wrong, along with an indomitable sense of hope. The story is of a young woman supporting a cause even in the face of all kinds of protests from her family. However, her experiences and reality have shaped her worldview in a manner that allows her conviction and dedication in her efforts and the battle, even if sometimes it means going against those she loves and holds dear. Along with this, the narrative has another significant comment to make, one about the unity of humankind as a pandemic leads to the erasure of the several lines of identity, religion and nationality that had divided us so far. Overall, the film is an honest attempt to give a glimpse into a world that is not marred by mindless hate and empty violence, but one which is instead constituted by an inherent notion of oneness. In the process, the core concern that it presents to the audience is - are we willing to attain peace if it also means losing many to a deadly disease? Can it truly be achieved by humans only when we find ourselves at the mercy of a pandemic?

The Morning After | Short Film Nominee

The documentary film draws one’s attention to the non-violent campaign that is being waged against China’s invasion of Tibet, now over seven decades old. The extremely volatile history of the region is briefly presented to the viewer by way of an organization that works towards bringing the voices of students and youth activists to raise awareness about the issue. 
The narrative further talks of the oppression of artists and the silencing of free speech, and inadvertently, thus works to amplify voices towards freedom of Tibet. Despite it all, hope for freedom, and a better tomorrow, must and should persist, and that becomes the overarching message that ties the entire narrative together. The end result uses bytes and stills, yet, it would be interesting to see how mood shoots can be employed in future endeavors to enhance the ambiance and, in turn, the impact of the message.

Students for Free Tibet | Short Film Nominee

The short film is an engagement with several aspects of a man's approach to art and how it becomes a means of protest for him in several ways. From familial rejection to attempts to find space for himself in society, the short film invokes all of these concerns, and provides an inner conversation of the protagonist for the viewer to participate in.
