The path of a YouTuber and travel blogger crosses that of a traveler in an Indian hill station one day. As the conversation unfolds, the viewer is introduced to a reality of a potential romance, along with concerns for the environment and the manner in which travelers often harm it as they move from one destination to another. The film is well-intentioned and makes a dedicated attempt to raise awareness around the same concern, reminding people to be more mindful and conscious while traveling, and always ensuring that they never leave the place littered with trash in their wake. While the beauty of nature is inviting and welcoming, it should be cherished for the same and not worsened by our activities, underlines the narrative.

The short film adopts a fun, lighthearted manner to talk about a serious issue - the limited availability of resources on the planet. As we become increasingly aware of scarcity during the coronavirus pandemic, the narrative of Pass the Water reminds the viewer to be wary of the usage of different elements and commodities obtained from the natural environment.

A mother’s love for her child is deep, and yet when the child does not respect her, it is her duty to correct their behavior. This is true of the planet which the narrative portrays as the mother of the entire human race. Because her children have forgotten how to treat her right, resulting in mindless littering and wasting her resources, she is now sending a message to us through climate change. There is also the reminder to take better care of her, and spread that awareness to one another. The end result remains well-intentioned as it shares the same ideas with the viewer.

The film weaves together visuals and stock footage from different sources to take the viewer into the reality of contemporary times. All of this is further tied with a voiceover that allows you a set of signs of sorts, guiding you in the intended direction of the plot. What began as the exploitation of the planet that humans had begun to take for granted, soon led to a reality where we were all confined indoors. As the pandemic raged on globally, wreaking havoc all over the world, we were made to reflect on our actions. What also followed in its wake were misery and despair. However, how does one learn to overcome them and move forward? The film has an answer to share along with a comment on finding hope in the bleakest of times, as well as a way to move on to the next stage of life.

The film makes an intervention into the global ecological crisis by promoting the message of
sustainability. Instead of putting the onus onto macro-systems that begin their work only post the
disaster, the film seeks to highlight individual, self-conscious steps of waste-reduction which begin at the
stage of prevention, and go a long away. It offers an alternative approach towards mindful, community-
building and living.

Dayitva | Short Film Nominee

The short film uses thrill and suspense to build its narrative - one which is moving towards raising awareness about the manner in which we treat the planet as well as our environment. The story is of a single night when three friends are having a lighthearted hangout. However, things soon go south in the most unexpected ways. The film is an honest, dedicated and sincere attempt to tell its story, but loses points in terms of execution and the technical skill it employs to tell it. However, it should be noted that the performance shows potential that can be further explored in later projects.
