The story of Malaal is of a married couple struggling with bridging the distance between them. While Payal is unable to figure out how to reach out to her husband, Chirag, he does not help her in her efforts, and instead remains tightly shut.
Confronting the possibility of her abandoning him makes Chirag realise the folly of his ways, but is it sufficient to make him mend his ways? The film, supported by decent performances, raises the same question, drawing attention to how humans themselves have a tendency to self-sabotage their life and relationships. It would have, however, worked better if the plot was more comprehensive with clearly portrayed motivations of its characters.
