The film presents to you a very bizarre situation. A man having confined his existence to a toilet, now lives out his whole life from this small, cramped space. Baffling as it may be, the premise is engaged with lucidly, marked by humour and lightheartedness. The film is notable in the manner in which it does not take itself too seriously, allowing it a sense of effortlessness and, in turn, a successful execution of the plot. <br><br> Our protagonist is extremely conscious of the environment and its conservation, having attained his degree in the same field of study from the University of Oxford. All his years of research and observation of the world have led him to conclude that the best way to protect the planet is by cutting down his own interaction with it. And yet, one day, when he needs a little dose of the outside world, before he can confine himself to his toilet again for another two to three years, a harsh development awaits him in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent lockdown.

The story of the film relies on memory, reminisce and an idea of the past its two characters have seemingly left behind. However, more than anything, the overarching emotion that comes to dominate the narrative is one of regret of things that were never said out loud, and thus were forever left hidden as a secret that soon became to heavy to burden.

Putting together a narrative devoid of any dialogue, the film wants to tell the story of two characters - both battling their own personal demons. If it is abject poverty for one, it is alcoholism, and financial troubles, for the other. As their paths collide, a moment of companionship is allowed to the story. This further brings in the idea of hope, and how it can be found in the most unexpected ways. <br><br> Though the title of the film might first suggest that it would be a story of penury and misery, it eventually becomes one about a sense of camaraderie that allows two people to overcome their individual struggles, perhaps even allowing their existence a parallel pattern of sorts, as opposed to the idea of an arbitrary universe where things happen without cause or reason. In terms of technique, however, the film could have benefited from more lucidity and stability in its visuals. 



Burden of Existence | Short Film Nominee

The short film is a sincere attempt to invoke a sense of hope in everyone who finds their spirit daunted by a quarantined reality in a world that is afflicted by the coronavirus pandemic. The narrative is a reminder to never give in even in the face of adverse situations that might make you resort to excuses. However, now is the time to truly work on yourself, underlines Home, Hope and Hard Times.

The film solely employs shadows and silhouettes to convey its message. The story is essentially about the fight between light and darkness, a metaphorical one which is represented for the viewer visually as well. The plot further has the overarching message of light eventually finding its way no matter how impenetrable the darkness might seem.
