This Bombay Diaries production, though from 2017, becomes very relevant in the post #MeToo world. While more and more women come forward with their stories of sexual assault and harassment, this short film gives us a glimpse into the struggles of a woman who attempts to step out of the confines of her house in a patriarchal world. It’s time we stopped brushing workplace harassment under the carpet and instead called out the harassers, affirms Her. She may have been forced into silence, be it literal where she has forgotten to raise her voice, or metaphorical where she covers her skin, ties up her hair or refuses to wear make-up, but push her any further, and she will fight back, supported by all her fellow women. Dadi is a story found in every Indian household with the elderly. It's about empathy and allowing them to be children again, instead of simply writing off a behaviour which does not conform to cold adult logic. The short film is crisp and simple and manages to convey its message successfully. The intimacies between the grandmother and the family are shown subtly, also drawing attention to the friction which may exist between an old woman and her son, inevitable for two people who are similar in numerous ways. The latter allows it to be realistic and relatable, portraying a family which has conflict, but resolutions, anger, but kindness and love.

The short film starts on a lighthearted note which is why when the intensity builds up in the last few seconds of the film, it is significantly jarring for the audience. Invoking the terrible memory of the Elphinstone stampede in Mumbai in September 2017, the short film shows an average day in the life of a man living in the city. It further draws attention to how irresponsible statements can cause irreversible damage. With a reminder to always be wary of hearsay in public space which might result in panic and have far-reaching consequences, the short film succeeds in making the viewer sit up and think.
