The film wants to portray the life and times of an average Indian household, but by only using their footwear. The characters, thus, become different pairs of shoes which are coupled with dialogues that are delivered for the audience by several voices. Each of these pair is further used to suggest the imprint their footsteps leave behind long after the person who wore them has passed over to the next stage of existence. <br><br> Whether this imprint lasts forever or is quickly erased by the sands of time, that is the question that forms the core on which the narrative models itself. As for the answer, it lies within the story itself for the viewer who stays with it till the end.

Shades of Gray is an attempt to engage with the conversation around mental health in the country. It draws attention to the importance of class structures when it comes to treating mental health problems. <br><br> The film delineates two parallel narratives of women located at different positions in society. While one has access to mental healthcare, the other does not. Though the film is well-intentioned, it runs the danger of over-simplifying the conversation. The aim of the narrative is to talk about the lack of accessibility to healthcare in the country, but it finds itself unable to convey the same emphatically.
