It is inevitable to talk about ideas of justice, the law and vigilantism when one speaks of malicious deeds and the punishment that needs to be served to those who are behind them. The film attempts the same by positioning the conversation against a cheery atmosphere of a birthday party. The story is of one night when a young police officer discusses an unsolved case with her senior, also the father of the birthday girl. During the conversation, further engagement is invoked to draw the viewer's attention to child sexual abuse and crimes of a sexual nature most prevalent in India. The film wants to tell an honest and sincere story, and the same intentions are shared with the viewer to achieve its goals.

In a world where the pandemic, news headlines around it, and a general sense of dread threatens to overwhelm you, Dhwani brings a calmness to your life, only if for a few minutes. The short narrative is simply a tying together of different sounds, from mellow wind chimes to distant birds to a strong thunderstorm that threatens to spoil this calm, but eventually is overpowered by other sounds that follow. These sounds perhaps also become a metaphor for the different stages of life, experiences and memories of the woman on screen before you. However, irrespective of what they stand for, the corresponding visuals, along with the rest of the aesthetic, manage to convey to you a sense of peace, much needed in contemporary times.

Dhwani | Lockdown Film Challenge

Following the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic on the world, we were left drowning in a reality of emotional and physical isolation we had no precedence of. The short film is an attempt to portray the same by taking us into the life of its protagonist - a solitary woman who finds herself quarantined alone in her house of whites and greys. As the colors bleed into the visuals before you, the muted palette conjures a drab world of loneliness and its devastating effects on the mental health of the woman who impatiently awaits the return of her partner, Dhanush. The narrative further brings in dance and music to express the plethora of emotions the lockdown and the consequent quarantine invoked for us all, and in the same fashion, for the protagonist. At its climax, however, awaits a far shocking revelation the viewer would not have seen coming.
