‘Chappal’ wants to tell an important story, one that speaks about both cruelty and kindness. It also draws one’s attention to how the defenseless are treated by society. 

Our protagonist is a young girl who has no home or family. However, she is armed with the hope of meeting her mother one day by taking a flight to heaven where her soul resides since her passing. As she begs to save up enough money to buy a flight ticket, the world and its malicious elements have another plan up their sleeve. 

One day she comes into the company of a gentle, concerned woman, who clothes and feeds her, and yet, is unable to protect her from those who lose no time in taking advantage of her gullibility and naïveté. While the sound deparment exhibits some rough edges, the storytelling shows sincerity to make an important comment about the rampant prevalence of assault and violence inflicted on women.

Psychological thriller is a genre that captures the fantasy of innumerable filmmakers and viewers alike. The film belongs to the same category as it takes the audience into a conversation between a doctor and his patient who struggles with hallucinations. While a subtle comment on mental health can be sought in the narrative, it is primarily about the protagonist's experiences and how he may have recently committed a murder. He continues to move in circles, involving his doctor deeper and deeper into a rigmarole of stories of potential violence, a romantic rendezvous gone wrong and all that unfolded in the build-up to these events. Additionally, just when the viewer thinks they may have figured it all out, there is further a twist thrown their way, marking the unexpected conclusion of the film.
