‘Makhlooq’ is marked by a very dedicated attempt at engaging the viewer throughout with its story. A man is planning to take his life. He is accompanied by a forever-present loyal companion on this very disconcerting quest. 

As he moves from one failed attempt to another, the narrative soon makes its way to an important conversation located at a crucial juncture. This eventually gives way to the big revelation the film has been headed towards all along. 

There are relevant comments made about the rigid structures of society pertaining to one’s gender. Additionally, despite the despair and isolation that the protagonist is battling, there is a sense of hope that the film eventually wants to leave the viewer with.

Two strangers meet one night under unusual circumstances. Both of them are men located at very
different stages in their life. The young man is reclusive and hesitant at first, but slowly warms up to the
cheer of the middle-aged man. What unites them is India’s finest, and most loved poet and lyricist,
Gulzar. Maybe it was the sentiment of the poetry, the chai, the silence of the night or something in the
air that made him open up about his life’s deepest struggles to a stranger and earn invaluable life
lessons from the exchange. 
The film has an easy-going vibe to it which invites the viewer to be involved without coercively demanding this involvement.

The film comically traces the internal psyche of a man during the nationally mandated lockdown. He
begins playing chess with his father as a way to kill boredom, but from being a recreational activity, the
game soon turns into something mundane and dull. His enthusiasm eventually dies down, as the game of chess becomes a game
of patience for him.

The plot invokes violence and something sinister unfolding under the surface right from the start. It engages with the story of a newly-married couple who is absorbed in their moments of intimacy and affection. However, throughout, it portrays the woman as exhibiting behavioral tendencies which might suggest the direction in which the narrative is headed. When the final revelation arrives, would it be what you have been made to expect so far?
