The consequences of violence on the human mind are deep and lasting. The situation is more grim when it involves the presence of someone impressionable like a child. The short film pivots itself on the same concern, one of the vulnerability of a child in an adult world where those responsible for her nourishment and growth are actually leading her in the opposite direction.
Caged aims to conjure the sense of entrapment and helplessness a child struggles with in the face of domestic abuse and violence in her house. This is allowed a visual representation as well by including a transition from a colourless palette of claustrophobic walls to the colourful outdoors, while also steering clear of maudlin depictions or over-indulgence in sentimentalism. While the adults of her world may have failed her, the young protagonist of the film finds companionship in nature. It is through this engagement with its young character that the film succeeds in putting forth its intentions and concerns for the viewer to interact with.
