On the face of it, the film is about supernatural events that unfold one night in the life of a man. After working an exhausting job late into the night, as he finally turns in, he finds his sleep plagued with deeply disturbing developments. When he gets to the bottom of it, a realisation awaits him. While this solo project wants to invoke external horror, there is also the attempt to talk about all our internal pressures which attain terrifying proportions. This particular proposition was realised by more and more people especially during the past year as the lockdown made our work lives increasingly overwhelming, almost like a monster sucking our life force. The film too perhaps aims to convey the same.

You | Short Film Nominee

A part of a longer story, You 2 presents to us a man who makes regular video diaries. As he begins speaking into the camera, we learn about his recurrent nightmares and hallucinations that have been haunting his days for a while now. Unable to sleep, he finds himself staring at his reflection, imagining things that are not there. He often sees another presence, a man, perhaps himself, moving about in his room. The final result thus becomes an attempt in portraying a reality marked by the terrible developments that would come to define the protagonist's fate in a lasting manner.

Ill wants to tell the story of one man and the darkness of his mind. As it finds manifestations in the acts around him, a reality of violence, inflicted on others, and eventually on oneself, is invoked. The video has no dialogue, only a portrayal of events, as the protagonist moves from one situation to another. These visuals, devoid of speech, are supported simply by background sound and music. The only words that are communicated to the viewer are in the form of written text. It is indeed this text on which the story eventually concludes, leaving its final message for you. Since this is a solo project, it should further be noted for the effort, despite its rough edges.

The short narrative wants to talk about our immediate contemporary reality of a pandemic. It introduces us to the story of the protagonist who has known extreme distress and loss over the past couple of days. The main reason behind this is the fact that his sister is a healthcare worker, a doctor. However, this also exposes their family to tragedy. The story's message then becomes about hope and never giving up, even amidst all this pain.

Dawn | Lockdown Film Challenge

The narrative wants to contribute to a dialogue on an important issue - one of mental health. It also wants to talk about suicide prevention and the idea of finding hope, even when everything seems to be going awry. At the beginning of the story, a voiceover introduces you to these concerns, showing the events in the past that led to this moment. The plot finally comes a full circle when the past catches up with the present, taking you back to the thought it had opened with, also making its intentions clear for the viewer by now. While its goal is a positive one, the final product could have gained a little more from closer control on its visuals and a deeper engagement with its themes.
