The year is 2030, a time when the world battles dire shortages of resources. From water to clean air, humans have run out of all of them, making population control a desperate need. Reproduction is now heavily controlled by the government, and is deeply mired in red-tapism and corrupt bureaucracy. 

Stuck at the receiving end of these myriad complications are the hapless Sagar and Varsha, a couple struggling with their marriage, and looking to have a child as a last attempt to save the relationship. At the expense of the couple’s misery, the viewer is allowed moments of humor. As an interaction develops with a government official, their relationship too undergoes its own tests in a moment of crisis, eventually coming out stronger at the end of it all. 

In the process, the dystopian reality of the film is tied with satire, and crucial comments about the world are intertwined with moments of frivolity and lightheartedness.

The film opens with a shot of assumedly a groom getting ready for his big night. The camera zooms out to reveal that it is indeed a groom in his sherwani and other wedding paraphernalia, but at a restaurant instead of his wedding. The audience's interest is piqued further as he is soon joined by a woman. As the conversation begins to flow, the narrative attempts to introduce the viewer to the many complexities and nuances of love. It further tries a conversation about a bond between lovers that continues to exist whether or not they are together. The film generously invokes metaphors to talk about what it wants to say. However, perhaps it would have gained more from using them frugally and judiciously.

Last Time | Short Film Nominee

The short film invokes a conversation around the plight of ordinary citizens in a country like India which is drowning in red-tapism and bureaucracy. As an old man struggles to get official work done from a police station, he raises the overarching question - what is his identity? The film uses poetry as a significant tool to further drive this question home. While the forefathers of independent India might have had a particular reality in mind for the nation, why are we still far from it?
